Recap by phillip woo

Favourite Wild West Wing kept on gamely for the win after straightening near three lengths clear for a second win from his past three starts. He's really come into his own but it wasn't a strong race and might find it harder up in class next time out. U W Brother kept plugging away to just hold second following a box-seat run. He was able to build on a cosy win last start in Class Five. Oversubscribed ran on late to nearly grab second following a rail run behind midfield. It was a good effort first-up this season following a Class Five success in July. Ardenode closed well to just miss a placing after slotting one off behind midfield from a wide gate. He's building towards a win in his three starts this term. Peak To Peak stayed on without menacing following a midfield run. It was a positive effort on debut here. Wayfoong Charmer made ground late without threatening from towards the rear. He'll be one to reckon with especially on the dirt if he finds his way into Class Five.

Racing Incident Report

Race Five: (198) - HING MAN HANDICAP - Class 4 - 1000Meters

After arriving at Happy Valley, PEAK TO PEAK was found to have sustained a small cut across the jaw.

PEAK TO PEAK was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race.

BRILLIANT began only fairly.

U W BROTHER shifted out at the start and bumped GRATWICK.

SUNNY SMILE was steadied in the early stages to obtain cover.

Making the turn after the 600 Metres, HONEY BEE was shifted out away from the heels of GRATWICK which made the turn awkwardly.

HONEY BEE then got its head on the side and lay out and consequently travelled wide and without cover.

Near the 550 Metres, PEAK TO PEAK lay out and was awkwardly placed inside the heels of GRATWICK.

Rounding the Home Turn, PACKING CHAMPION was awkwardly placed close to the heels of GRATWICK.

After initially shifting out away from the heels of U W BROTHER at the entrance to the Straight, PEAK TO PEAK was shifted to the inside of that horse after the 300 Metres when disappointed for running between U W BROTHER and CARRY THE DIAMOND which shifted in.

Passing the 50 Metres, PACKING CHAMPION raced tight inside WAYFOONG CHARMER which lay in under pressure.

When questioned, M Chadwick stated that he was asked to ensure that he obtained cover on OVERSUBSCRIBED.

He said, from barrier 7, it was felt that there were a number of horses that would be ridden for speed which were better drawn than OVERSUBSCRIBED and as that horse had previously proved difficult to settle when ridden aggressively in the early stages, he was asked to shift OVERSUBSCRIBED across behind runners in the early stages and attempt to improve his position closer to the rail.

He said in accordance with his instructions he steadied OVERSUBSCRIBED shortly after the start and was able to shift across behind WAYFOONG CHARMER in the early stages before improving approaching and passing the 800 Metres to obtain a midfield position.

He said after obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight OVERSUBSCRIBED quickened well, however, its run ended over the concluding stages.

When questioned, Z Purton (CARRY THE DIAMOND) stated that he was instructed to obtain a position with cover in about 4th or 5th if possible from the outside barrier.

He said CARRY THE DIAMOND began very well and he commenced to shift his mount across with HONEY BEE.

He said after the 900 Metres there was a line of horses inside CARRY THE DIAMOND and he believed that he would have had to restrain the horse too heavily to obtain a trailing position and in any event to obtain cover he would have had to come back a long way and therefore he felt that it was a better option to allow CARRY THE DIAMOND to improve its position after the 800 Metres and cross runners to his inside to race outside the lead.

He said after the 700 Metres CARRY THE DIAMOND lay out away from WILD WEST WING and after this did not travel comfortably.

He added CARRY THE DIAMOND came under pressure at the entrance to the Straight and then gave ground noticeably over the latter stages of the race.

A veterinary inspection of CARRY THE DIAMOND immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

A veterinary inspection of BRILLIANT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

WILD WEST WING and U W BROTHER were sent for sampling.
