Pritam Singh case: ex-Singapore MP Raeesah Khan faces more impeachment bids
The bid filed by Singh’s lawyer Andre Jumabhoy centres on what he says are discrepancies in Khan’s police and parliamentary statements
The lawyer representing Singapore’s opposition leader Pritam Singh on Wednesday launched two more impeachment bids against prosecution witness and former Workers’ Party MP Raeesah Khan, pointing again to discrepancies in her statements.
Singh, 48, is embroiled in a controversy stemming from Khan’s lies to parliament in August 2021 about accompanying a rape victim to a police station.
Now facing two charges related to his testimony during parliamentary committee hearings held in December that year, the Workers’ Party secretary general is accused of providing misleading statements about his interactions with Khan, who resigned shortly after the scandal.
On Wednesday, Singh’s lawyer Andre Jumabhoy, echoing the drama from the end of Tuesday’s session, pointed to contradictions between Khan’s police statements and what she gave as evidence in the trial, in a failed bid to discredit her as a witness.
On October 4, 2021, Khan lied in parliament for a second time when questioned by Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam for more details about the mentioned rape survivor. During the questioning, she sent a message to Singh that read, “What should I do, Pritam?” but did not get a response.
She testified on Monday that the night before the parliamentary session, Singh had told her he would not judge her for continuing the narrative, giving the impression he was supportive of her continuing the lie.
