Hong Kong’s women shrugged off the absence of a host of key campaigners to book an Asia Rugby Sevens Series semi-final meeting with all-conquering China on Sunday.

The second leg of this year’s competition is being staged at Hangzhou Normal University, where almost exactly 12 months ago Andy Vilk began his head coach reign by leading Hong Kong to an Asian Games bronze medal.

A clash with the forthcoming 15s WXV3 competition forced Vilk into a reshuffle this weekend, and he had urged those coming in to grasp their opportunities.

The players responded handsomely, although it was sevens mainstay Stephanie Chan Chor-ki who inspired 29-5 victories over both Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates.

Victory in the first of those was especially impressive, coming two weeks after a full strength Hong Kong team needed a last-ditch try to beat Malaysia 17-15.

Chan scored 14 points, with Grace Hood, Chian Hoi-ning and Wong Sze-ying all crossing, as Hong Kong racked up five tries in the match.
