The 31-year-old has been working with both senior sides since arriving in the city, and is expected to help women’s head coach Andy Vilk at the first leg of the series in South Korea.

Vilk’s side will take on Singapore, Malaysia and favourites China in Incheon, starting on Saturday.

“Robbie brings us a wealth of knowledge and experience in playing international sevens and of the modern game, something that gives everyone a chance to keep learning,” said Paul John, who has overall responsibility for Hong Kong’s sevens teams. “He started his coaching with GB Women’s sevens while still playing, so he is used to balancing his schedule and working hard.”

Fergusson, who ended his playing career in June after Team GB failed to get out of the same Olympic repechage as Hong Kong, said he had started thinking about life after rugby earlier this year, knowing whatever happened he would step away this summer.

“When I was playing at the Hong Kong Sevens in April, I had a few chats with the coaching staff and got a feel for the place, and then when the role came up I decided to give it a shot,” he said.
