Hong Kong’s men delivered a trio of devastating displays to book an Asia Rugby Sevens Series semi-final against Japan on Sunday.

The city’s women also reached the last four of this season’s opening leg in Incheon, South Korea, where they too will meet the Japanese after escaping their pool more narrowly.

Both sides were in action for the first time since June’s Olympic repechage tournament in Monaco. Jevon Groves’ men, playing under new captain James Christie for the first time, comfortably claimed the scalps of Singapore, South Korea and UAE on Saturday.

“We showed some consistency with our defence and were pretty aggressive,” head coach Groves said.

“We’ve been working really hard on getting the ball back from the opposition, particularly trying to contest possession at the contact area … I think we can still improve in certain areas around our kick-off, and our accuracy around our set piece. If we do that, we’ll be in a good place against Japan.”
