Recap by phillip woo

After working into the open 300m out following a rails run from behind midfield, The Khan reeled in Joyful Life 60m out for a maiden success at his 11th start. He was one of the form horses and did come on from a rallying fifth last month. Joyful Life did everything but get the win after surging to the lead 150m out following a pace-stalking run. He's a winner waiting to happen with seconds in three consecutive 1,200m starts. Smashed late in betting, Medic Elite motored late to take third in deep stretch after settling midfield on the fence. It was another honest performance. Fire Ball found a few too good after a prominent run on the fence. He should come on for the run. Youth Power did respond reasonably well under the whip to take fifth after settling second last from a wide draw. He has improved from one run to the next. Favourite Aromatica only plodded when asked for an effort after making his run with cover from better than midfield. He likely needed the outing after placing in his final three starts last season.

Racing Incident Report

Race One : (65) - SHENYANG HANDICAP - Class 5 - 1400Meters

Horse No 1 LINK (J177) A Badel Jumped awkwardly.

Crowded near the 1100 Metres.

After the event, A Badel reported that after being crowded near the 1100 Metres his mount did not travel well afterwards.

He said in the Home Straight LINK hung out, proved difficult to ride and he felt there may be something amiss with it.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Horse No 2 JOYFUL LIFE (H426) K C Leung Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 3 NOBLE WIN (H195) A Atzeni Bumped at the start.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race found that horse to be a "roarer" which had previously been reported.

Horse No 4 AROMATICA (H437) Z Purton For some distance near the 1100 Metres was crowded by TSUEN WAN GLORY (M Chadwick) which shifted in before being corrected by its rider.

M Chadwick was reprimanded.

After the event, Z Purton stated that, in his opinion, AROMATICA may derive benefit from today's first up performance.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 5 THE KHAN (H489) H Bowman Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 6 ALWAYS AWESOME (H245) P N Wong Shifted in at the start and was bumped.

When questioned regarding her riding, Apprentice P N Wong stated that her instructions from a wide barrier were to ride ALWAYS AWESOME in a conservative manner in the early stages, but was given no specific instructions thereafter.

She said after commencing well she elected to restrain her mount in the early stages to comply with her instructions, however, ALWAYS AWESOME relaxed underneath her and as a consequence lost ground on the main body of the field.

She added throughout the middle stages she encouraged ALWAYS AWESOME to improve into the event and entering the Home Straight she shifted out to secure clear running.

She said, under pressure, ALWAYS AWESOME lay in and as a result she then changed her whip through to her right hand, however, as she did so, ALWAYS AWESOME lay out and shifted towards the grandstand rail.

She further stated that near the 250 Metres she was able to correct her mount and ride it out to the finish of the event thereafter.

Apprentice Wong agreed with the Stewards that in the early stages of the event she had misjudged her riding by restraining ALWAYS AWESOME which resulted in it losing contact with the field in the early stages.

Apprentice Wong was advised that in similar circumstances she would be expected to show better judgement than what she did on this occasion.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 7 YOUTH POWER (H358) M L Yeung From the outside barrier was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.

Between the 450 Metres and the 350 Metres was held up for clear running.

Again approaching the 250 Metres had difficulty obtaining clear running for a short distance.

Horse No 8 FIRE BALL (D087) Y L Chung Passing the 50 Metres shifted out, resulting in its rider Y L Chung having to stop riding and straighten his mount.

Horse No 9 MEDIC ELITE (G129) K Teetan Jumped only fairly.

Horse No 10 TSUEN WAN GLORY (E403) M Chadwick When questioned regarding the performance, M Chadwick stated that whilst his mount travelled satisfactorily in the early stages, it failed to respond to his riding in the Home Straight and lay in when giving ground.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
