Recap by phillip woo

Intrepid Winner outdashed early favourite Ensured to score his first Hong Kong city on his 11th start in the city. The tempo suited him, and he was overdue after knocking on the door in each of his past five races. Ensured finished nicely one from the right to just miss after making his run behind midfield near the inside. He relished his rise in trip after his rallying fourth over 1,650m last month. Savvy Kingman was swamped late after poking his head in front 50m out following his one-off-the-rail trip behind midfield. He relished his return to the course and distance of his three wins last season. Lucky Diamond got up for fourth without menacing the top three following his handy run on the fence. His was a respectable run following back-to-back wins in lower grade. Champion Dragon went too hard in front with top weight. Robot Warrior ran on without menacing from the rear of the field. He is better suited in Class Four. Royal Bomb had his chance after his box-seat run. Tempest Express faded after his pace-stalking role trying the Valley for the first time. King's Capital was a non-factor after taking a bad step 1,200m out.

Racing Incident Report

Race Six: (155) - PO YEE HANDICAP - Class 3 - 1800Meters

ENSURED began only fairly.

ROYAL BOMB and CHAMPION DRAGON bumped on jumping.

CHAMPION DRAGON then shifted out and bumped BULLETPROOF.

From wide barriers, KING'S CAPITAL, INTREPID WINNER and ROBOT WARRIOR were all shifted across behind runners to obtain cover.

Despite being vigorously ridden in the early stages, LUCKY DIAMOND was slow to muster speed and after the 1600 Metres was shifted across behind the leaders to obtain cover.

Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, PRAGMATISM travelled keenly and was awkwardly placed close to the heels of LUCKY DIAMOND.

A Badel (SAVVY KINGMAN) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that for some distance approaching and passing the winning post on the first occasion he permitted his mount to shift in, resulting in SAVVY KINGMAN placing pressure on ENSURED and causing ENSURED to be taken in onto KING'S CAPITAL, resulting in KING'S CAPITAL racing unnecessarily tight inside ENSURED and near the 1300 Metres being severely checked and losing a significant amount of ground.

A Badel was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Wednesday, 30 November 2022 and to expire on Monday, 5 December 2022 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays).

In addition, Jockey Badel was fined $60,000.

Passing the 700 Metres, ENSURED shifted out and was awkwardly placed inside the heels of SAVVY KINGMAN.

At the 300 Metres, as BULLETPROOF was being shifted out to obtain clear running, BULLETPROOF and LUCKY DIAMOND bumped as a result of both horses shifting ground.

LUCKY DIAMOND then became unbalanced when bumped on the hindquarters by BULLETPROOF, resulting in LUCKY DIAMOND shifting in and causing BULLETPROOF to be awkwardly placed close to the heels of WORLD FAMOUS when disappointed for running between that horse and LUCKY DIAMOND.

BULLETPROOF was then shifted to the inside of WORLD FAMOUS approaching the 200 Metres.

Approaching the 50 Metres, ENSURED and INTREPID WINNER raced tight.

When questioned regarding his riding of ENSURED rounding the Home Turn, S De Sousa stated that he shifted his mount to race behind PRAGMATISM approaching the 400 Metres as he felt that ENSURED's best opportunity to finish the race off would be to obtain clear running to the outside of horses, given that when he rode the horse at its last start ENSURED took some time to build momentum.

He said passing the 400 Metres he was awkwardly placed close to the heels of PRAGMATISM which at this time had SAVVY KINGMAN racing to the outside.

He said although he could have shifted ENSURED to the inside of PRAGMATISM at this time, he felt that LUCKY DIAMOND, which was racing in advance of PRAGMATISM and to its inside, had come under pressure and therefore he was concerned that if he shifted to the inside of PRAGMATISM, then he may not be able to obtain clear running.

He said he therefore elected to remain racing behind PRAGMATISM until entering the Home Straight at which time he shifted ENSURED to the outside of PRAGMATISM and then SAVVY KINGMAN to obtain clear running.

When being shifted out, ENSURED bumped INTREPID WINNER approaching the 300 Metres.

After the race, Z Purton (TEMPEST EXPRESS) stated that whilst the race was run at a quick tempo in the early and middle stages, nonetheless TEMPEST EXPRESS travelled keenly and would not relax and because of this, in his opinion was then not able to finish the race off over the concluding stages.

A veterinary inspection of TEMPEST EXPRESS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

A veterinary inspection of ROYAL BOMB and KING'S CAPITAL immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

TEMPEST EXPRESS, INTREPID WINNER and ENSURED were sent for sampling.
