Hong Kong duo Ho Yuen-kei and Tse Tak-wah “kept believing” as they clinched gold medals in the Boccia mixed pairs BC3 event at the Paralympic Games.
The pair overcame South Korea 5-3 in the gold medal match on Thursday.
And tapping into the “Hong Kong spirit” displayed by Vivian Kong and Cheung Ka-long at the Paris Olympics last month, the two battled their way to victory.
“During ups and downs in a game, you often lose stability and clarity,” Ho said. “The biggest strength of ours today was that we believed, and we kept believing even when things seemed to be going downhill.
“That was the biggest factor behind our victory.”

The golds were clinched on the same day as compatriots Leung Yuk-wing and Cheung Yuen won silver in the Boccia mixed pairs BC4 event.
And Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee congratulated the quartet on their achievements.
“All Hong Kong people and I are proud of the outstanding performance and professionalism of the four athletes,” Lee said.
Secretary for Culture, Sports & Tourism Kevin Yeung also praised the athletes as well as their teams following their triumphs in Paris.
“I was so excited to personally watch the athletes strive for excellence in their respective mixed pairs events,” he added. “The outstanding results are not only the hard-earned success of the athletes, but also the accomplishments of the coaches, medical and support teams.”
For Ho, this was her second gold, having secured first place in the women’s individual event on Tuesday and she said this level of success was beyond her wildest dreams.
“I am so grateful and surprised,” Ho said of winning two golds. “Before coming to Paris, my goal was to win one medal each in my two events.
“But a gold medal in each? Nope. I never thought of that. It’s such a big surprise.”
Her teammate Tse was equally delighted at their achievement.
“I am incredibly excited and so happy because I cannot believe that I am now a Paralympic champion,” he said.

Meanwhile, Leung was keen to highlight what an “amazing” achievement it had been to win a seventh Paralympic medal, having first competed 20 years ago.
“When I first played in the Paralympics, back in [Athens] 2004, I went in just to enjoy myself,” he said. “I did not expect myself to win a medal and all that. Twenty years on, to still find my way onto a Games podium is quite amazing and unbelievable at once.”
And while Cheung was satisfied with his two silver medals, having also finished as runner up in the individual event, she wanted to use this as a platform for improvement.
“It is my first Paralympic Games, so to win two silvers is something I am very proud of and happy about,” she said. “At the same time, both these medals are a reminder for me to train harder, improve my strategies, work on strengthening myself mentally and perform better in the future Paralympic Games.
“In the women’s individual final, I felt that mentally I wasn’t very strong. I was quite nervous in the final. But in this final, I felt I had improved a lot in that department.
“I hope to continue this improvement going forward, because I am aware there’s a lot of room for improvement for me in this aspect.”
Hong Kong have now won eight medals at the Paralympics – three golds, four silver and a bronze.
