CrossFit has experienced a year like no other. Along with contending with Covid-19 and having to rapidly come up with inventive ways to host the CrossFit Games, the company was put through the ringer by a scandal sparked by a tweet.
Here are the top 10 stories from 2020, in terms of views:
10. CrossFit Games 2020 round-up: who qualifies for the final in California as Mat Fraser and Tia-Clair Toomey win online competition?
The CrossFit Games was split into two legs. The first one saw 30 men and 30 women compete from around the world in an online competition, with the top five heading to California for the finals. The 30 athletes were selected from the top 20 in The Open and 10 from the Sanctionals.
With the quality so high, the difference between the best and the very best was marginal. So it’s no wonder so many people tuned in to find out who made the cut.




9. CrossFit Games 2020: Kari Pearce on her amazing abs, final five and trying to beat Tia-Clair Toomey
As excitement ramped up to the final five’s showdown in California, fans began to wonder if anyone could topple the dominant Tia-Clair Toomey.
Kari Pearce was in for a shout, and having been crowned the fittest women in the US three times an upset was on the cards. What’s more, you were clearly intrigued about Pearce’s core workout.
8. Tia-Clair Toomey vs Sara Sigmundsdottir has fans salivating for Wodapalooza this weekend
The Wodapalooza is always one of the most competitive Sanctionals of the year and 2020 was no different. Sara Sigmundsdottir came into the competition in fine fettle. The Icelandic superstar is followed by the question, “Is this her year?” Once again, CrossFitters around the world wondered if she could take the next step and knock Tia-Clair Toomey off top spot.

7. Hong Kong’s CrossFit star Ant Haynes on Greg Glassman’s ‘FLOYD-19’ tweet – ‘I do not accept his pathetic excuse for an apology’
Former CEO Greg Glassman started a storm when he tweeted “FLOYD-19”, linking the death of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer and the Covid-19 pandemic. He was questioning a post by Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) which featured a picture that stated “Racism is a public health issue”.
The CrossFit community was rightly incensed. Hong Kong’s top CrossFitter, Ant Haynes, joined the chorus of athletes voicing their displeasure, calling Glassman’s eventual retraction a “pathetic excuse for an apology”.
6. CrossFit: Mat Fraser and Tia-Clair Toomey will soon decide the sport’s fate as company remains embroiled in controversy
The Greg Glassman controversy snowballed. A leaked Zoom call recorded him spouting conspiracy theories about Floyd’s death and the pandemic. Former employees accused him of sexual harassment. Glassman stood down but stilled owned CrossFit and, as the accusations mounted, CrossFit athletes increased the pressure from online posts to calls for boycotts.
Mat Fraser and Tia-Clair Toomey, the two most high-profile athletes, held the cards for the final knockout punch, but Glassman then announced he was in the process of selling the company, starting the long rebuild and eventual ownership change to new CEO Eric Roza.

Rich Froning, four-time winner of the CrossFit Games, added his voice to the condemnation. Froning has been a senior figure in the CrossFit community for a decade, winning the team competition multiple times along with his individual medals. When he talks, people listen.
4. CrossFit Games 2020: Haley Adams, the fittest teenager on earth, from Mayhem to the California finals
The next generation of CrossFitters is bursting
onto the top stage. Haley Adams was one of the five who made it to the final. At just 19 years of age, she caught the imagination of the community. She lived up to her billing and won many more hearts and minds.

3. CrossFit CEO Greg Glassman apologises for George Floyd tweet saying it was a mistake, but ‘not racist’
If Greg Glassman’s original tweet was not the beginning of the end for him, then his apology was. He sort of said sorry without saying much, and then doubled down on his original point by saying that it was valid, just the way it was phrased was an issue.
“I made a mistake by the words I chose yesterday,” he wrote.
2. CrossFit Games 2020: Sara Sigmundsdottir chokes again, but there is hope for her as she unwittingly practises for pressure
CrossFit fans were shocked to see Sara Sigmundsdottir fail to make the top five at the CrossFit Games. She had such a good run of form and then fell at the final obstacle again. We speculated that the pressure got to her, but that she was putting in the building blocks to deliver on her promise next year.
She later revealed she had an injury that became infected and affected her hormone levels, preventing her from performing at her best. Here’s hoping she recovers quickly and is back to her best soon.

The top story of 2020 is the first of what turned out to be many stories about Greg Glassman’s tweet. When he originally posted his message, there was an immediate reaction from sponsors. They wanted to distance themselves from the storm.
Eventually, Glassman was replaced by Eric Roza as CEO and owner of CrossFit. The change in leadership brought an end to the scandal and a start to the healing process.
