Those mocking Andy Ruiz Jnr’s portly body shape are no longer laughing after his sensational TKO victory against Anthony Joshua – and Joe Rogan thinks the Mexican actually may have benefited from his “big belly”.

Ruiz became his country’s first heavyweight boxing champion with a shock seventh-round win at Madison Square Garden last Saturday night, claiming Joshua’s IBF, WBA and WBO world titles.

No one gave him a sliver of a chance against Olympic gold medallist Joshua, who is around five inches (12.7 centimetres) taller and in far better physical shape.

“If you do have great cardio, one thing body fat can do is it can protect you somewhat,” Rogan said on his podcast, the Joe Rogan Experience. “It’s like wearing eight sweaters.

“I’ve joked around about this before, because most of the impact goes there. But look at [UFC heavyweight champion] Daniel Cormier.
