The Hong Kong government has acknowledged an increase in demand for halal dining options for Muslim visitors from Asia, the Middle East and beyond. Its efforts to make the city a destination that is friendly to Muslim visitors are appreciated. The government needs to work together with local hotels and catering industries to better understand halal food so the relevant authorities can streamline the process of obtaining halal certification and create more dining options for Muslim travellers. The Incorporated Trustees of the Islamic Community Fund of Hong Kong, which conducts halal inspections and issues halal certification in the city, is ready to play its part and help improve understanding of halal certification procedures.

Consuming halal food and drink is required for all Muslims regardless of their background or where they come from. While halal requirements are often associated with meat, they also apply to other products, including processed foods, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Halal requirements also permit the consumption of seafood, vegetarian products, fresh and dried fruits, honey and milk as long as they are free from contamination by non-halal substances.

We have noticed that in Hong Kong, halal food appeals to people outside the Muslim community too. This can be attributed to its ethical sourcing and high quality. Strict halal requirements mean these foods will be free of harmful additives and prepared with great care, appealing to health-conscious diners seeking clean and wholesome meals.

The presence of halal options at major tourist destinations such as Hong Kong Disneyland further enhances the city’s appeal. It allows families from various backgrounds to enjoy an inclusive dining experience without worrying about dietary restrictions. Offering halal food in such prominent locations shows Hong Kong’s commitment to inclusivity and its ability to cater to a diverse array of dietary preferences.
