Social media in China has been shocked by “control freak” parents who installed a surveillance camera in their adult daughter’s bedroom.

Details of the couple’s spying began to emerge on July 26 when a 20-year-old woman, who uses the pseudonym Li, went to a Beijing police station for help.

The second-year university student told officers she was running away from her home in another province because she “wanted freedom”.

Li said her parents installed a surveillance camera in her bedroom, and would hit her and throw her phone on the floor every time she made mistakes.

She said the violent parenting has left her suffering from trauma.

She planned to find part-time jobs in Beijing to save money and be independent from her parents.
