A Hong Kong start-up has managed to prevent the equivalent of 15,000 disposal containers from going to waste in just over a year thanks to its tableware rental service.

Established in January 2023 by Kelvin Tsui Ka-hei and Amy Lai Sui-fong, the company hopes to go beyond what it has already achieved.

“Our broader vision is to create a zero-waste takeaway culture in Hong Kong,” CEO Tsui said. “We want to show that sustainable practices can be integrated into everyday life without inconvenience.”

ReCube has also been selected as a finalist for the Spirit of Hong Kong Awards 2024 in the “sustainability” category.

Co-organised by the Post and Sino Group, the annual awards recognise Hong Kong’s unsung heroes and celebrate their contributions to the community.

“We saw how much single-use plastic was being generated every day from takeaway orders. I thought: ‘This is a problem we can solve’. That’s when the idea for ReCube was born,” Tsui said.
