Wikipedia user banned for ‘alleged trolling, doxxing and intimidation’ of Hong Kong journalists
Police chief Raymond Siu says force has received two reports related to claims that dozens of reporters, their family members and employers have been harassed
The foundation that operate online encyclopaedia Wikipedia said on Saturday that it had taken the “extremely rare action” of globally banning a user who was found to be involved in alleged acts of trolling, doxxing and intimidation against Hong Kong journalists.
“In Hong Kong, a city with the rule of law, anyone who is threatened or harassed should report the case to police,” he said.
“Police will surely handle the case impartially regardless of one’s background.”
The association said on Friday that “self-proclaimed ‘patriots’ had sent anonymous complaints by email or letter to at least 15 journalists’ family members and their family members’ employers, landlords and related organisations, including charities, schools and private businesses”.
At least 36 journalists were also identified in Facebook posts with hateful content, while “trolls” had used the social media platform and Wikipedia to “make threats of violence, including death threats” in at least four cases, the association said.
