McDonald’s has announced McGriddles will bid farewell to Hong Kong at the end of the month after the sweet-and-savoury pancake sandwich became the talk of the town when it made its local debut in July.
The fast food giant on Thursday said the breakfast sandwich had been well received by locals with its “unique salty-sweet flavour successfully capturing the taste buds of the whole city”.
“McDonald’s would like to thank you for everyone’s support and announce that McGriddles is expected to be gradually sold out in all branches at the end of September,” it said.
“But don’t worry, McGriddles will see you all again … Fans should seize the last chance to savour the burger again!”
McGriddles contains a slice of grilled sausage and cheese served between fluffy hotcakes injected with maple syrup. A Sausage N’ Egg version is also available.
The sandwich first became popular among Hongkongers after some people posted online it was a must-try item for anyone travelling to Japan.

McGriddles was introduced in Hong Kong at the end of July, leading to some residents ordering the sandwich as early as 4am on the first day of sales.
The fast food chain earlier said it sold more than 1 million McGriddles within the first two days of it being available.
The Post also found an offer to resell a Sausage N’ Egg McGriddles on Carousell, a popular resale platform, for HK$300.
Food delivery platform Foodpanda, which offered the item for home delivery, invited Japanese actor Kimura Takuya to star in an advertisement.
Reaction to the news of McGriddles’ disappearance from Hong Kong was mixed.
“Why can’t it be on [the Hong Kong] menu for good, when it is in Singapore McDonald’s menu for the last 20 years?” one user wrote on Facebook.
Another person wrote: “I have eaten it a few times. Although it is of course less tasty than that in Japan, I think it is quite good, nice to have it once in a while.
“It is not a pity that it will no longer be available. At least I can have it when I travel to Japan.”
An Instagram user said: “It is sweet and salty at the same time, which tastes off.”
A number of people suggested the fast food chain bring back other popular burgers, with one saying: “It tastes really bad. I think the Shogun Burger is much better.”
