2 Hong Kong parks to illuminate Mid-Autumn nights with lantern displays from Thursday
Lantern displays at Victoria Park and Tsing Yi Park will be lit at 6.30pm on Thursday and continue nightly till next Wednesday’s public holiday
Two major parks in Hong Kong will launch their Mid-Autumn lantern displays on Thursday night and continue for a week until next Wednesday’s public holiday celebrating the traditional Chinese festival.
At Victoria Park, several lantern installations in various sizes have been erected, including a 12-metre-high display made in the shape of a qipao, and a 7.5-metre-tall one created by students called the “Tree of Budding Creativity”.
The rest of the lanterns will be arranged based on four themes: clothing, food, accommodation, and transport. The displays will remain till next Wednesday, a day after the Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar.
Other artists’ creations will also be on display, including phoenixes and peonies from local paper craft master Hui Ka-hung, as well as lanterns in the shape of ancient Chinese architecture made by craftsmen from Sichuan province.
The lanterns Tsing Yi Park draw inspiration from traditional Chinese poetry, with a display of Foshan lanterns highlighting the craftsmanship of southern China. Visitors can also enjoy dance and music performances by local youth and children.
