Sam Hou-fai becomes sole candidate for Macau’s top job after securing 383 nominations
Macau’s former top judge will run uncontested in leadership poll, set for October 13
Sam, former head of Macau’s Court of Final Appeal, officially submitted his bid on Tuesday to run in the coming leadership poll with 383 nominations from the 400-strong Chief Executive Election Committee. Candidates must garner at least 66 committee nominations.
Sam’s number of nominations exceeded those of Macau Chief Executive Ho Iat-seng, who received 379 votes, or 92 per cent of the total.
“So far, I am very satisfied with the support of so many election committee members. I didn’t anticipate how many I would get as I never thought about this issue,” he told reporters after submitting official documents on Tuesday morning.
“The key is to follow my own timeline in running the campaign and to spend more time considering how to discuss my campaign platform and my future governance philosophy with all sectors of society.”
The former judge has arranged at least 20 meetings with electors and local associations since announcing his bid, including with groups representing retired civil servants and professional dancers.
