Tsang’s comments came on Sunday during an “sharing session” at Caritas House in Central about his 12 months in jail. The former chief executive was cleared of criminal misconduct by the city’s top court on June 26, bringing a long legal battle punctuated by health problems to an end.

“If you believe in Jesus Christ, Hong Kong is a place of happiness. God will care for us and we need not worry too much,” said Tsang, 74, to more than 500 fellow Catholics at the forum.

“Hong Kong will certainly get better. Of course, there will be some problem in the process [but] we need to have confidence.”

He continued: “I’m a Hong Kong boy. I believe in Hongkongers and love Hongkongers.”

A series of mass protests against the suspended bill have rocked the city since June. The bill would have allowed the transfer of fugitives to jurisdictions where Hong Kong did not have an agreement, including the mainland.
