Chief Inspector Vilhalmur Stefansson of Icelandic police told the Post on Wednesday that the man lost control of a rental car while driving along a gravel path at Krokssel at around 2pm on Tuesday and crashed into the Fossa River.

The car was found upside down in the river at a depth of about two metres (6.6 feet). No other cars were involved.

Stefansson said the driver was pulled out of the car by passersby, who gave first aid until emergency services arrived.

He said the woman was receiving treatment at Akureyri Hospital.

The woman got out of the car by herself, according to police.

The chief inspector said the rental car was new and no evidence was found to suggest drink driving or speeding were involved. The speed limit in the area is 80km/h (50mph).
