The force said on Friday that the haul, discovered in a Kwai Chung hotel the previous day, comprised 31kg of what appeared to be cocaine and four litres of suspected liquid cocaine stored in four red wine bottles as cover.

Inspector Liong Chun-hin of the force’s narcotics bureau said the police operation successfully prevented the large batch of cocaine from circulating on the underground market.

Officers had been lying in wait outside the hotel room on Thursday after intelligence indicated the syndicate was using it for storing illegal drugs, police said.

The inspector said officers ambushed the man when he left the room in the evening.

“In his rented premises, officers seized 31kg of suspected cocaine and four red wine bottles used as cover, each storing one litre of suspected liquid cocaine,” Liong said, adding that the haul had an estimated street value of HK$24.8 million.
