Hong Kong residents can expect to enjoy discounts of up to 30 per cent at more than 3,600 restaurants, cafes, supermarkets and convenience stores as part of celebrations for National Day on October 1.

Food and catering businesses on Friday said they would be offering an array of deals, such as cheaper groceries at supermarkets, a 30 per cent discount on egg tarts, 25 per cent off vegetarian shark fin soup, and one-for-one buffet lunches or dinners at several hotels.

Simon Wong Kit-lung, executive director of restaurant chain LH Group and chairman of the Quality Tourism Services Association, said that in spite of the city’s slump in consumer spending, the discounts were not focused on stimulating business but were “celebratory offers”.

“It is like when you hold a party to celebrate your 75th birthday, you’re not doing it with the expectation of receiving more cash gifts than you pay for hosting the party,” he said.

Hong Kong’s year-on-year retail sales have been in contraction for months amid a downturn in stock and property markets and a growing trend of residents crossing over to mainland China to shop and dine on weekends.

But food and catering sector lawmaker Tommy Cheung Yu-yan echoed Wong’s sentiments, saying the National Day deals were about celebration and not primarily aimed at deterring Hongkongers from crossing the border to spend during the holiday.

He revealed that 3,661 restaurants and other food-related businesses had committed to offering National Day deals and discounts as of Friday, and urged more industry players to join in.
