Diners have applauded the reopening of a popular Hong Kong cooked food market in Sheung Wan after six months of renovations, saying they now have more affordable meal options in a better environment.

Operators in the Queen Street market said on Thursday that they were thrilled to see loyal customers return although pricier ingredients would make running their business harder.

Sunny Cheng Wan-fat, 39, co-owner of the family-run Traditional Beijing Dumpling House, said he saw a lot of familiar faces as customers tucked into the stall’s five signature dishes, ranging in price from HK$50 to HK$67.

“We only had lamb dumplings left by 2pm. The ones made with pork and shrimps were all sold out. The support is overwhelming,” Cheng said. “But it is getting more difficult to run the business.”

Cheng said while the monthly rent for his stall had remained at HK$15,000, the increase in the price of ingredients had posed a challenge to his business.
