Amber rainstorm warning issued at lunchtime as widespread heavy showers hit Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Observatory issued an amber rainstorm warning at lunchtime on Monday, as the city was hit by widespread heavy showers.

The forecaster raised the signal at 1.35pm, saying it expected the rainfall would exceed 30mm in an hour and that it was likely to continue.

The warning was cancelled at 3pm.

It also warned of flash flooding.

“Showers and thunderstorms associated with a broad trough of low pressure are affecting the coast of Guangdong and the northern part of the South China Sea,” the Observatory said.

“Showers will be heavy at times with squally thunderstorms in the next couple of days.”
