Hong Kong NGO predicts results needed to win university spots for DSE students
- Students have ‘very high chance’ of getting university spot if they score 20 out of 35 in their five best subjects for entrance exam, NGO says
The Hok Yau Club shared its prediction on Sunday, three days before more than 50,000 students will receive their results for this year’s Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) exams.
Official figures show 39,300 have applied to study at the city’s eight publicly funded universities through the Joint University Programmes Admissions System, with 15,000 places up for grabs.
Ng Po-shing, a student guidance consultant with the NGO, estimated that the level of competition would be similar to last year, noting the number of candidates applying for university places and taking the exams had only fallen slightly.
He predicted that candidates who achieved scores of 20 or above in their best five subjects under the seven-level grading scale would have a “very high chance” of securing a university spot.
But Ng added that other factors such as interview performance and each programme’s admission requirements would need to be taken into account.
