Hong Kong issues T1 warning as Severe Tropical Storm Yagi moves closer
Electricity firm CLP Power also says it has taken steps to minimise weather risks to overhead cables
Hong Kong issued a No 1 typhoon warning at 5.40pm on Tuesday as Severe Tropical Storm Yagi continued to edge closer to the city, the Observatory said, adding that it would consider whether to upgrade the signal the next day.
“According to the present forecast track, Yagi will still maintain a distance of more than 400km from Hong Kong tonight and tomorrow morning,” the forecaster said.
“Its strong winds are not yet affecting the vicinity of Pearl River Estuary. The standby signal, a No 1, will remain in force until at least noon tomorrow.”
At 10.25pm, the forecaster issued an amber rainstorm warning. The signal is issued when heavy rain has fallen or is expected to fall generally over Hong Kong, exceeding 30mm in an hour, and is likely to continue. The amber signal was cancelled at 11.50pm.
The forecaster expected the weather would still be very hot on Wednesday with a few squally thunderstorms.
The weather will deteriorate progressively in the following couple of days. It will be windy with squally showers and seas will be rough with swells.
