At least 55 people were killed and over 700 people were injured after huge explosions at a warehouse in the northeastern Chinese port of Tianjin, according to the officials and eyewitnesses on Thursday.

"I thought it was an earthquake, so I rushed downstairs without my shoes on,” Tianjin resident Zhang Siyu, whose home is several kilometres from the blast site, said.

In this gallery, photographers from AFP, AP, EPA, Reuters and Xinhua bear witness to the devastation.
