Doctors at Beijing Children’s Hospital said on Tuesday the main difficulty with Fan Zixuan’s operation was trying to locate all of the needles – including ten hypodermic needles and two sewing needles – inside her body.

Three of the needles were found in Zixuan’s chest, one of which was very close to her heart. One was discovered in her abdomen while the rest were concentrated around one of her hips.

The hospital said it hoped the infant could be discharged within a week.

Police at Gaotang county in Shandong province have identified an aunt of Zixuan as the main suspect. The woman committed suicide by drinking pesticide at her home in Gaotang after the incident came to light.

The aunt was reported to have asked before she committed suicide if fingerprints could be left when needles were removed.
