STYLE Edit: How Gucci’s Towards Winter collection uses a soft new woollen fabric to take the chill out of the air

‘Tis the season to get into Gucci’s new GG wool fabric. The Italian luxury house has unveiled its Towards Winter collection which features the comfortable and cosy fabric made for colder climes. The use of weighty fabrics and practical techniques like padding and wadding in this collection ensures that your fashion choices don’t come with a risk of the cold.

Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele took the idea of wrapping oneself in thick, cosy fabrics as a theme for the Towards Winter collection. Practically, we bundle up in blankets for warmth but Michele takes it further by considering how the blanket is an enveloping, protective layer. This harks back to his vision for the Gucci Fall/Winter 2019 collection, when Michele used masks as a motif, whereby masks were a means to protect us from the real world.

But philosophical inquiries aside, the GG wool fabric looks snug.

The fabric, inspired by an original 1930s Gucci design, features the house’s interlocking G motif and, for the most part, comes primarily in two colours: beige with an ebony GG pattern, and blue with a red GG pattern. There are some silk and soft accessories which carry the pattern in a third pink and burgundy palette.

In addition to ready-to-wear pieces – including a fabulous reversible GG wool poncho – accessories in the Towards Winter collection offer a delightful pop of Gucci eccentricity for the season.

Backpacks feature the GG wool fabric with the addition of a black mesh technical back. Depending on the colour, the bags come with black or blue grosgrain trim. There are also totes in the fabric featuring a hook closure and adjustable leather strap, perfect for filling last-minute Christmas shopping or Boxing Day sales.

For something more compact, Gucci releases two new pouch shapes and a belt bag with a magnetic flap closure. These, too, feature the new wool fabric.
