American – best known for his work with designer Raf Simons at Dior and Calvin Klein – launches the men’s and women’s wear label at a fashion fair in Italy

Long-time fashion supporting player Sterling Ruby has stepped into the limelight with his own brand of men’s and women’s wear. Los Angeles-based artist Ruby, who has been applauded for his examination of the intersection of personal expression and societal rigidity, is perhaps best known for his collaborations with designer Raf Simons at Christian Dior and Calvin Klein.

Taking a cue from Simons and the denim uniforms he once sewed for the staff at his studio, Ruby has launching his own fashion brand, S.R. STUDIO LA. CA. “I’ve always been interested in the behavioural power that comes with clothing,” Ruby said.

I’ve always been interested in the behavioural power that comes with clothing … something that impacts the way one can think, feel and move ... I couldn’t be more excited to finally put my clothing out into the world

“For years I have been privately exploring garments as a medium, as something that impacts the way one can think, feel and move. I couldn’t be more excited to finally put my clothing out into the world.”

Ruby’s art, which incorporates ceramics, painting, drawing, collage, photography, sculpture, video, and textiles, will inspire the ready-to-wear clothing line. It is expected that his sartorial sense will reflect the same subjects his art does: distressed psychology, urbanism, hip-hop culture, masculinity, Americana and consumption.

S.R. STUDIO LA. CA, which made its debut this month at Pitti Immagine Uomo 96 – the biannual fashion fair held in Florence, Italy – has been 10 years in development, and could be the shake-up that the fashion world needs.
