The Speedmastermarks its 60th anniversary this year. It has been one of Omega’s most recognisable models. While it is best known as the first watch to be worn on the moon (strapped onto astronaut Buzz Aldrin’s spacesuit), its roots actually started as a watch for motor racing.

This year, Omega revisits the Speedmaster’s heritage with the launch of the Speedmaster Racing Master Chronometer collection.

The collection features a stainless steel version with a matt black dial and an 18 ct Sedna gold version with a blue dial.

The stainless steel model has a distinctive aesthetic by complementing the matt black dial with orange accents used on the wording, hands and hour markers. The effect is a watch that looks young and feels sporty without being immature.

It has a black leather strap paired with orange rubber that runs down the middle. The strap also features micro perforations throughout where the orange rubber peeks out of, which, apart from making it look sporty, also helps keep the skin feeling aerated.

The gold version, on the other hand, looks and feels sleeker and a bit more sophisticated than the first, while still successfully retaining the sporty factor. The gold case complemented by the blue dial makes for a strong visual, while leather strap adds classiness.

Both models feature an “alternating” minute track in a racing style, which acts as a throwback to earlier Speedmaster models. The timepieces are powered by the calibre 9900/9901, approved by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS).

The year 1957 was most significant for Omega in terms of producing sports watches that all went on to claim spots as classics in watchmaking history – the Seamaster 300, the Railmaster and the Speedmaster. The brand is launching limited editions of these three models to celebrate their 60th anniversary. For the first time, Omega used a digital scanning technology to accurately re-produce the original watches. Each watch is limited to 3,557 pieces. A special Trilogy box, which contains all three timepieces, is available but limited to 557 pieces.
