Was it love at first sight? “He showed up on his first day wearing pants with these animals printed on them, birds or ducks? And loafers, and a button-down shirt,” says Li.

“At that point, we were all wearing sweatpants in the office on days with no events, and I was like, where is this guy going? Afterwards, he relaxed a bit, although he would still dress like that to go to meetings. I thought it was interesting.”

His take was a little more complimentary. “When I first met her, I thought two things. One, I thought she was really fashionable,” Kinoshita says. “She has her own taste, and it comes from her personality. She doesn’t have to belong to anything, and she has her own way, both in fashion and in work,” he says.

The two were married last year, and Li still occasionally helps out with Social Capital events, while Kinoshita now works as the international brand director in Asia for American sneaker label Keds – a fitting alignment, given Kinoshita’s obsession with US fashion history.
