Maika Monroe in a still from Longlegs, one of five movies or shows to watch in Hong Kong this weekend, August 31 to September 1.

Nicolas Cage in a memorable serial killer role, a nostalgic manga adaptation and a Hong Kong gangster film await cinema-goers in Hong Kong this weekend. Alternatively, stream Yorgos Lanthimos’ new film – deeply strange and divisive, naturally – or a princess K-drama.

1. Longlegs

LONGLEGS - The End Trailer - In Theaters July 12

One of the most talked-about movies of 2024, this horror thriller written and directed by Osgood Perkins – son of Anthony Perkins (Norman Bates in Psycho) – offers a genuinely creepy ride as a young FBI agent (Maika Monroe, It Follows) with unusual instincts strives to solve a series of occult clues to end a killing spree.

You may or may not have heard about this, but Nicolas Cage has outdone even himself and made quite an impression as the serial killer of the title, who is thought to be linked to a series of mass murders where he appears to have made families butcher themselves without actually entering their homes.

The polarising film doesn’t have the masterful screenwriting to match Cage’s memorable performance. But for horror fans looking for a deliberately paced chiller that is rich in atmosphere, albeit relatively short on substance, Longlegs should do the job.

Longlegs opens in cinemas today.

2. Look Back

Tatsuki Fujimoto’s 2021 manga Look Back is an uncharacteristically nostalgic one-shot from the creator of Fire Punch and Chainsaw Man.
