The Gates of Hell may be wide open right now – read our explainer on the Hungry Ghost Festival if you have no idea what we are on about – but that should not stop you from venturing out, even at night.
Here are our recommendations for this weekend.
1. Love Psychedelico – Live in Hong Kong 2024
With a huge following in Hong Kong, Japanese rock duo Love Psychedelico are returning to the city for a one-night-only concert ahead of their upcoming Japanese tour.
Kumi and Naoki met at university and founded the band in 1997, and now have eight albums under their belts.

Fans can look forward to a live performance of their terrific new single, “Forgive Me Not”, which was released in May.

2. Alien: Romulus
Set between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1987), director Fede Álvarez’s smart take on the Alien series captures the feel of the original movies quite superbly as a ragtag group of Weyland-Yutani employees look to steal some cryo-pods from a derelict space station.
Unfortunately for them, it just so happens that this space station, the Renaissance, is infested with xenomorphs.


Starring Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) as Rain – a young woman every bit as capable as Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley – and David Jonsson as the “synthetic” Andy, the film features plenty of surprises from Álvarez (Don’t Breathe), who truly understands what makes the Alien franchise tick.

3. Yunnan mushroom menu at Chilli Fagara
With mushroom season in full flow in Yunnan, Chilli Fagara in Central has prepared a spicy mushroom menu for guests to appreciate various fungi from the Chinese province.
On the menu are drool-worthy dishes including wok-fried porcini with Yunnan pepper and dried chilli; mala mixed mushrooms with chicken clay pot; and more.

4. Otrotango Dance Studio
Said to be a “three-minute love affair when you dance with all your heart”, Argentine tango is one of the most romantic and intimate of all dance styles.
Headed by champion tango dancers Raymond Chu and Lily Cheng, Otrotango will have you dancing Argentine tango in no time with classes tailored to everyone from beginners to advanced learners.
There is no need to go with someone (though you can) as partners are rotated during each class, with the number of men to women balanced as closely as possible.

Trial classes run on most Sundays – the next one with available spots is on August 25 at 2.15pm – but you can jump straight into beginner classes, which run on several days of the week, including Saturdays.
The fee for a trial class is HK$210 per person or HK$180 for early bird bookings made seven days in advance. Advance registration is required. Packages are available for regular group classes.
