Commerce officials from China and the United States are scheduled to conduct talks in the northern Chinese city of Tianjin on September 7, the Ministry of Commerce said at a press conference in Beijing.

China’s commerce vice-minister Wang Shouwen will co-chair the meeting with US undersecretary of commerce for international trade Marisa Lago, added the ministry.

Both sides would exchange views on a wide range of topics, the ministry added, including concerns over economic and trade policies, enterprise demands and practical cooperation between the two countries.

The announcement came as the world’s two largest economies have started a new round of communication, including talks between the US Department of the Treasury and the People’s Bank of China in Shanghai earlier this month, and a visit by US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan to Beijing this week.

Under the administration of US President Joe Biden, bilateral tensions have heightened across various fronts. In addition to the tariffs imposed on a wide range of Chinese goods by former president Donald Trump, Washington has ramped up controls on advanced technologies, including a ban on semiconductor exports and restrictions on US investments in China’s hi-tech fields.

China’s trade with the US reached US$383.2 billion during the first seven months of the year - a 1.4 per cent year-on-year rise compared with 2023 - according to data released by China’s General Administration of Customs.
