Acclaimed by The Sunday Times as 'the most vivid coverage of Hong Kong in the run-up to the handover', the series captures the fears and hopes of the city before, during and after the political watershed.

Joined by her father, fellow director Po-chih Leong, Leong set out to provide a 'grassroots or a street-level view of what people felt'. The film features such key figures as Tsang Yok-sing, former leader of the Democratic Alliance for Betterment of Hong Kong, Christine Loh Kung-wai of Civic Exchange, and Jimmy Lai Chee-ying, boss of Next media.

And depending on the events of July 1, she may be compelled to add an epilogue. 'It has become apparent that many of the political issues we are facing are the same as when it was 1997,' she says. 'Even the people in power are the same. I was planning on doing something 10 years after the handover, but it seems now may be the right time to gauge the public's feelings. I think I will bring a camera with me during the demonstrations.' The FCC tonight shows July 1996-July 1997 and next Tuesday One Year After: 1997-1998. Call 2521 1511 for details
