Mercedes-Benz took up the challenge from Range Rover when it introduced the M-Class in 1998. Although the model remains basically unchanged, it has been given two updates to keep it fresh against a raft of new opposition.

New engines and cosmetic improvements headed the list of M-Class upgrades released in 2000. Mercedes-Benz is working on an all-new replacement, which is not expected to hit the road until late next year.

The ML500 215kW V8 is a gem of an engine, and is hooked up to a slick five-speed automatic. Although not the most powerful engine in its class, it performs very well because the M-Class is lighter than most of the others.

The M-Class is the sole remaining vehicle among the luxury models to feature a separate chassis. This traditional approach, with a body bolted to a chassis (as opposed to a single frame body, common now for cars and 4WDs) augurs well for off-road forays. It is a tougher design that allows components to be better protected underneath, but comes at a cost to on-road refinement.

Compared with other luxury 4WDs, the ML500 feels cumbersome when cornering quickly, and its body flexes and fumbles on rough roads.

But it will go a long way off-road, with its low-range gearing, traction control and protected underside.

Ultimately, its lack of clearance and space-saver spare tyre stop it from being the off-road king.
