Guests part of the big picture in Langham Place Hotel art experiment

Hotels have long strived to impress guests on their first arrival at the lobby, but few have come up with ideas more than extravagant chandeliers, designer furniture or impressionist paintings on the wall.

Langham Place Hotel, on the other hand, has a novel approach - to let visitors become a part of the artwork right in the lobby.

As a part of the hotel's Art-in-Residence programme, Indian artist Sumakshi Singh put together a studio space that does not make sense on close inspection. The artist talked about her art pieces at a cocktail party last Wednesday.

But if visitors, standing inside the messy studio, turn their heads to the live screens that show them from another perspective, they may be surprised to find themselves standing in a perfectly sensible space that is otherwise incomprehensible.

The fun and engaging installation artwork is the effort of the artist's meticulous placement of different graphical elements, objects and cameras.

'It's a yoga idea, that the world around us is basically an illusion,' Singh says. 'The artwork I created is somewhat a fictional reality.'
